Body Brushing and Healthy Skin

Dry body brushing is one of beauty's best-kept secrets. Do it regularly and you'll transform dry skin, reduce cellulite and tone up problem areas.

For that instant feel-good, look-good factor, body brushing is unbeatable. Just one three-minute session will make your skin feel noticeably smoother and your body feel invigorated from top to toe. Make it a regular part of your routine and you'll soon notice that your skin looks more toned and feels silkier than ever before.

Meanwhile, deep down, you'll be giving your circulation an energising boost and stimulating your lymphatic system, which is responsible for removing cellulite-causing waste from your body.

The key is to use a dry brush on dry skin - brushing can stretch wet skin -just before a bath or shower and always sweep in the direction of your heart. Do it three times a week and you'll soon see and feel the results.

Body Brush Benefits

Sloughs away dead, dry skin and softens hard skin. Speeds up skin cell renewal, revealing new layers that look and feel softer and smoother. Helps break down fatty deposits and reduce cellulite, making your bum and thighs look more taut and toned.

Stimulates blood flow and leaves you with a healthy glow. Aids lymphatic drainage, so that your body gets better at eliminating waste and toxins. Boosts oxygen circulation and gives your body a mini workout. Can help reduce ingrown hairs if done regularly.

Give problem areas the brush-off

GOOSEBUMPY ARMS

Tiny bumps on the upper arms are caused when excess skin cells build up around the hair follicles. Solve the problem by spending a few seconds doing short firm strokes from elbow to shoulder. Also use a salt scrub exfoliate once a week and massage in a rich moisturiser every night - but be sure to let it sink in before getting into bed.

Dry skin cells can build up on your elbow, making your arms look 20 years older than the rest of you. You can brush this dull, grey skin away using a gentle circular motion. Also get into the habit of applying hand cream to your elbows regularly throughout the day.

HARD SKIN ON HEELS

A build-up of dry skin can cause the heels to become hard and scaly. Short sweeping strokes with a firm brush (see our chart overleaf) will help keep your feet soft, as will a weekly soak in a warm tub, followed by a good pumice.

  • Brush the same area several times - one sweep isn't enough to exfoliate
  • Do not brush the nipples - dry brushing can be harsh on sensitive area
  • Wash your brush regularly - dead skin can get clogged in the bristles

start at your feet and always brush towards the heart.

Body brushing is best done first thing in the morning when its invigorating action stimulates blood flow.

Do it at night and you may find it hard to get to sleep.

Start at the soles of the feet I and make long sweeping movements towards the knees.

Use firm anti-clockwise movements over the thighs, hips and buttocks.

Brush with light, circular strokes, moving upwards from the stomach to the chest

  • Do not worry if you get blemishes - your skin is detoxing, it will clear up
  • Brush thoroughly before applying fake tan - it gives a more even finish
  • If you have a skin condition - speak to your doctor first

More top toning tips

I have just started body brushing. I'm already seeing results, but is there anything else I can do to improve the appearance of my bum and thighs?

Brushing is a great start and will really help to break down the fatty deposits and toxins that make the bum and thigh area look lumpy, but exercise and diet can also help.

Swimming, cycling and gentle activities like yoga and pilates are perfect for improving muscle tone in this area. Even a quick spurt of window shopping in your lunch hour will help aim for 20 minutes.

Also buy a 1.5 litre bottle of water, fill it every day and sip your way through the whole lot

No other drink is as effective at flushing away toxins and keeping body weight and cellulite in check. Other things you can do include cutting down on toxin-laden caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and fatty, sugary foods.

You don't have to cut them out completely, but cutting down a little bit on each one (drinking two cups of coffee per day rather than five, for instance) will make a visible difference to your bum and thighs in the long run.

Before you get your morning, started it's time to brush up on some beauty secrets you'll see what I mean Olga has more. What if I told you there was a simple wellness trick that only takes five minutes a day cost nothing and helps cleanse your body inside and out wow it's called dry skin brushing you talk about their health benefit is Jeff Van Hecke national sales manager from Yerba Prima. Good morning.

Good morning. Can you see I'm excited?

You are.

Inside and out cleanse your body.

That's right. This is great!

Alright, Jeff.

What is dry brushing?

Well, it's exactly what it sounds like.

Okay well, it's exactly what it sounds like.

Dry brushing the skin and it's in a certain pattern to help stimulate the lymphatic system and kick toxins out of the body.

So why would people do this?

Brush their skin?.

well, it's very important because the lymphatic system has no central pumping mechanism. Ok so it has to travel backward in an upward motion towards the heart and when you move it along with the dry brush it; had actually helped to stimulate the part of that process removing toxins from the body. And the benefits are the? Benefits are healthier happier body ok going to help to remove those toxins those unwanted toxins from the body it also helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells which is very important because you're opening up the pores and you're bringing the new cells to the light of day. .

And of course I'm going to bring to life something that many women worry about which is cellulite, like not that I have anything ok, But just in case I do, just show me how this works and how it would improve cellulite.

Ok well, let you know this is actually being used by a lot of salons and alternative health practitioners throughout the country for detox and also for cellulite as a beauty brush. .

What you want to do is you want to start on the outer parts of the body so you would start with the hands and the feet, you would go with up your legs, you want to come up your arms brush your back and then do your torso and you want to start very gently because you don't want to irritate the skin especially if you've never done a dry skin brush before but it's, get over time this will actually get softer and you can adjust the amount of pressure that you need. .

I would do this before the bathroom or after I would assume before. You would do it before showering and it'll help you feel you feel invigorated after doing it usually use it for about two to three minutes and get in the shower is going to help to wash away all the dead skin cells and it's also going to help to get rid of those toxins.

And what about wrinkles and I use it here. No, you would not want to use it on your face. Not on my face. Not the waist, the breast or the groin. Okay yeah, those are good areas not to do it and after I do it what would I notice? I'm gonna try it. You're going to notice your skin is going to feel much better. You're going to just go to feel more supple, you're actually, you're kicking out to toxins so you're going to feel invigorated that way and overall you're going to be improving your health.

And what do you tell the sceptics out there, that say, Come on! Come on! A dry brush? .

I'll tell you, dry brushing is actually been used by cultures around the world for hundreds if not thousands of years and so this is not a new concept by any stretch and we've actually we invented the category of cleansing whole body detoxing over 35 years ago in the natural foods industry so I tell my sceptics you can count on Yerba Prima. Ok, thank you so much. That was of great information. Can keep it? .

Absolutely. I'm going to try dry brushing tonight.
