Lipstick: No make-up is complete without it.

Lipsticks are available in pots, pencil and stick form. Perhaps because of the great variety to choose from many mistakes are made in selecting lipstick colours. The guidelines, however, are very straightforward. Everyone's lips can benefit from a beautiful coating of colour.

For a classic glamour look your lipstick must always balance your eyes. Therefore, dramatic eye treatment must be complemented by dramatic lips; soft eye colours require soft lip colours.

It is also important to tone your lipstick with your blusher, and don't forget that make-up is only part of a total look that includes fashion, style and colour, and even hair treatment.

Everything should be co-ordinated for a harmonious effect.

Avoid at all costs creating a top to toe battlefield out of colour, style and texture!

Lip Appeal: Application

For a smooth finish and knife-edge line always use a lip Brush. It should be a small, flat Sable brush and any straggly hairs must be cut off.

Close lips to give a firm surface. Take plenty of lipstick on to the brush as this makes it easier to achieve a good line. Lay the brush flat against your lips to move evenly along their natural outline. Fill in where necessary. Open your lips in order to colour the corners properly. Always working out from the corner point.

To blot the lipstick, place a tissue across both lips and, using the flat of your thumb, press gently over your mouth. Too much pressure will take off too much of the lipstick. For extra staying power dust with loose face powder and apply a second coat.

For a glamour finale over-lay lips with gold or silver frost. Alternatively use clear gloss for a tantalising but 'innocent' dewy look.

To accentuate your lips in a more defined way use a fine lip pencil to outline the bow of the top lip and then blend with a lip brush to soften. For a strong contrast or correcting of lip shape, outline the whole of your mouth before you apply the lipstick.

Tip: Soft, glossy lip colours bleed more easily than harder wax ones. Don't take clear gloss right to the edges of your mouth; it may cause lipstick to run.

Tip: To stop lip colour bleeding use lip pencil over the entire mouth as a lipstick, and then add gloss.

Lip Care

Nothing adds to your look more than luscious healthy lips, and some careful nurturing will keep them in great shape.

Your lips are not only one of your most prominent features, they're also one of your most sensitive areas. They're made up of thin skin and millions of nerve endings -but they have no natural oil glands, which is why they're prone to drying out, and why it's so important to treat them with care.

Some lipsticks and glosses can also dry out your lips, along with environmental factors like air conditioning and cold weather.

But it's possible to keep them moist and luscious

Chapping: You need a balm with an SPF factor and ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide to protect from wind, sun and cold weather. Some lipsticks also come with built-in sun protection.

Split or Dry Lips: Use a moisturising lip balm containing emollients such as shea or cocoa butter to replenish dry and split lips. Apply it just over the edge of your lips and always dab on a layer before bedtime.

Cold Sores: If you suffer from the occasional cold sore, don't panic. Use a medicated treatment (look for aciclovir on the label) and apply your lipstick sparingly with a small cotton bud to prevent possible re-infections.

Deeply Lined Lips: Some balms contain thickening ingredients that fill in lines and make your lips look plumper and smoother

Before you go to bed, pierce a capsule of vitamin E supplement and smooth it onto tired, dry lips for a super-softening treat

Lip Conditioning

  • Place a small blob of moisturising lip balm on your finger and smooth it evenly over your lips. This will ensure that your lips are protected and soft when you exfoliate and that the skin doesn't get dragged or damaged.
  • Take a soft toothbrush or child's toothbrush and move it gently over your lips in small circular motions. Continue until you have smoothed away any flaky, chapped skin on your lips. Be careful not to apply too much pressure.
  • When you've finished exfoliating your lips, re-apply a small amount of the same lip balm and slather it over your lips. Blot off any excess oils with a tissue. Let the balm sink in for five minutes before applying your lip colour.
  • DO try a tinted lip balm for moisturisation with a touch of colour
  • DO let lip balm sink in for 5 minutes before applying lipstick
  • DO apply lip balm regularly - don't wait until your lips feel dry
  •  DON'T lick your lips - saliva will dry them out even more
  • DON'T wear matt lipsticks on dry lips - they'll look worse
  • DON'T use grainy exfoliants on your lips - they're too rough
