A trip to the hairdresser always results in clean, glossy hair - it's all down to clever washing, conditioning and styling. Our simple detox reveals how to get the same results at home.

The main cause of dull hair is too much product and not enough rinsing

Clean, healthy hair looks great. Its smooth surfaces reflect light and lock in moisture, giving it natural shine and bounce. But harsh treatments and pollution can wreck it. Colour processing and heat styling weaken and dry it out. Too much product coats and weighs it down. The result is dull, lank, dirty, or difficult hair - or, more simply, toxic locks.

Sounds familiar?

Then it's time to detox. find out how to bring your hair back to life with deep cleansing to banish build-up, perfect conditioning to restore health and shine, and styling product essentials to keep you away from the toxic hair cycle.

DETOX YOUR HAIR IF:

It looks tired and lacklustre.

It's unmanageable and lacks body.

It dries out or gets oily more than usual.

It's too tangled for your fingers to run

through it from root to tip.

You use styling products regularly.

You smoke or go to smoky places.

You live or work in built-up or polluted areas.

Washing Your Hair

Washing your hair is the first stage of your hair detox session. Your aim is super-clean locks, and to achieve this you need to wash your hair the way the experts do it. Use just a little shampoo, then rinse, rinse, rinse - experts warn that the prime cause of dull hair is too much product and not enough rinsing. Your normal shampoo will usually be fine, but if you tend to use a lot of products, try a detox, deep cleansing or chelating shampoo - these are specially formulated to deep cleanse your hair and rid it of product build-up.

  • Run a comb through your hair before washing to remove tangles, grime and dry skin.
  • Drench hair thoroughly before shampooing - the water helps prevent hair breakage.
  • Use just enough shampoo to cover a large size coin - no more
  • check
Lather the shampoo into your hair from root to tip and massage the scalp gently..
  • check
Rinse for three or four minutes; when your hair feels clean, rinse for 10 more seconds.
  • check
Once is enough - repeat only if your hair is very grimy

Conditioning

Whatever your hair type, it needs conditioning every time you wash it. Conditioner smooths the hair cuticles, making it easier to comb through without breaking, and it seals in moisture so your hair stays shiny and doesn't dry out.

Don't worry about over-conditioning - it's not possible, providing you're using the right product for your hair.

PERFECT CONDITIONING
  • 1
Opt for a product specifically tailored to your hair type.
  • 2
Standard conditioner only needs to be left in the hair for 30 seconds and no longer, as it acts on the hair instantly.
  • 3
Smother conditioner on the hair ends but don't take it to the roots - the natural oils here keep them well-conditioned
  • 4
Rinse thoroughly to prevent a sticky build-up.
  • 5
Only use a leave-in conditioner if your hair is dry, curly or frizzy.

Deep conditioning

Dry, damaged and chemically treated hair needs weekly deep conditioning treatments, such as hair masks and hot oils, to restore it to health. These treatments act like long, moisturising drinks and contain rich ingredients which penetrate the hair, helping to reconstruct damage and lock in moisture. Look out for natural nourishes like aloe Vera, and rice or wheat protein on the label. Home-made hair masks, such as the one below with moisturising banana and detoxifying grape seed oil, can be just as effective.

After shampooing and conditioning, finish off with a rinse in cold water - it flattens the hair cuticles and makes hair instantly shinier.

Ingredients for hair mask

HOME-MADE HAIR MASK

•           1 ripe banana

•           10ml/2tsp grapeseed oil (available from health food shops and supermarkets)

•           Clingfilm

Mash the banana, then mix in the oil to make a thick paste. Massage into the hair and scalp, cover the hair in clingfilm and leave for 30 minutes.

Wash out using a mild shampoo.

10 ingredients equals 10 remedies to improve skin and hair using common home ingredients

Most of us will go to a lot of trouble to keep to a strict beauty regimen so that our skin, hair, and nails look gorgeous all the time. People across the world spend millions to reach their beauty goals and to try and prevent themselves from going under the knife eventually.

The beauty industry is a multi billion-dollar business, and most of the products are not your typical home ingredients, but commercial products, packed with chemical ingredients; some of which can often cause allergies and damage to your hair and skin.

Look at some hectic sounding chemical names found in beauty ingredients:

  • Methyl, Butyl, Propyl, Ethyl Paraben
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Synthetic colors
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Synthetic Colors
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Triethanolamine
  • Diethanolamine
  • Imidazolidinyl Urea
  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Behentrimonium Chloride, and more.

Scary! These toxins and chemicals in commercial beauty products can do plenty of harm. But were you aware that there are natural ingredients you probably have at home that should not be scorned at or under-estimated?

Some of these products listed below have the capacity to make your skin and hair glow and shine with health from inside and out:

  • Olive oil
  • Almonds
  • Avocado
  • Green Tea
  • Honey
  • Oatmeal
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Tomatoes
  • Olive Oil for your hair and skin is not only a wonderful oil to consume and cook with, but it is an ancient ingredient, being used because of its beautifying abilities. Not only does your hair benefit, but your skin and nails too. Olive oil has monounsaturated fatty acids to protect your skin from sun damage. If you want to enhance your hair and skin and your overall health, add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil – extra virgin olive oil – to your diet, period.
  • Avocados: It makes no difference whether it’s the fruit, the seed or the oil, avocados need to form part of your beauty routine – especially if you have dry skin. When you eat half an avocado every day when in season, you are protecting your skin. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology did a study in 2012. The report found that when people take regular doses of avocado, they bolster their cells to protect them against harmful free radicals.
  • Green Tea: There are many health and beauty benefits when it comes to green tea. First of all, it has plenty of antioxidants in it to prevent free-radical damage from harming your skin caused by sun damage. Green tea, in addition, helps to fight against you getting skin cancer. Use this fantastic face mask a couple of times a week to hold back time and keep your skin healthy. Mix plain yogurt, 3 tablespoons, with 1 tablespoon grounded green tea tealeaves and a touch of turmeric powder. Smooth this over your face and neck, allowing to stay on for about 20 minutes before using lukewarm water to rinse off.
  • Lemons: We all know just how many beauty secrets lemons have. Full of vitamin C, brimming with antioxidants to prevent free-radical damage, lemons have the ability to boost collagen production in your skin, restoring elasticity. As far as your hair goes, lemons are known to combat itchy scalp and dandruff, balancing the PH levels of your scalp and supporting beautiful hair growth. Just take 2 lemons, adding the juice to a cup of water. After shampooing, rinse your hair with this, and then 5 minutes later, with clear water. Do this about twice a week for soft shimmering hair.
  • Coconut Oil: There are heaps of nutrients found in this oil that support hair health, skin and nail health; general overall health. Coconut oil has plenty of moisture in it, protecting your skin from sun damage, reducing inflammation and revitalizing your skin. The oil penetrates deep into your hair, helping with its growth, gloss, and health. And for hair that has been chemically treated, coconut oil is sheer healing because of its hydrophobicity properties. For your skin, you can smooth soothing coconut oil all over the body, waiting about 30 minutes before going under the shower, and then apply a light moisturizer afterward. If you do this daily, your skin won’t be dry and if your skin is really dry even after a shower, apply a light layer of coconut oil on your skin.
  • Honey

Honey is the natural beautifier, healer, and tonic for the body. Composed mainly of glucose and fructose, there are amazing proteins, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and plenty to offer to keep your skin and hair in peak condition.

Recent studies from the journals of Cosmetic Dermatology compliment honey saying how it has emollients and humectants in it to soothe and condition the hair, let alone keeping the skin young and wrinkle-free.

Raw organic honey even improves seborrhea dermatitis of the hair, preventing hair loss when applied on a weekly basis.

For hair loss, take 2 tablespoons each of onion juice and honey and massage into your scalp, allowing it to stay on the scalp for about 30 minutes.

Then shampoo as usual. For your skin, mix the same amounts of fresh lemon and honey and apply to your face and neck, allowing it to dry naturally before rinsing.

  • Oats

Look at this soothing mask:

Oatmeal and Almond oil hair mask

  • ½-cup oats
  • 1-2 tablespoons almond oil
  • ¼ -½ cup milk

Mix all ingredients well, ensuring hair is detangled. Apply from your roots to your tips, leaving on for about 20 minutes.

Then shampoo as normal. Oats help to exfoliate the skin, getting rid of dead skin cells, and even dandruff, itching and combatting hair loss.

As for your skin, it helps to reduce acne, soaking away the oil. It is also superb as a scrub for the skin.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar helps to treat dandruff on the scalp because the acidity makes it difficult for dandruff producing fungus to develop on the scalp. All you have to do is mix the same parts of water and apple cider vinegar adding to a spray bottle. After your hair is shampooed, spray over your scalp, leaving for about 15 minutes before rinsing. Do this twice a week to see amazing results. If your hair is thinning and you experience hair loss, spray ACV over the scalp, because it balances the PH balance of your scalp.

And here are 2 more beauty secrets from nature:

  • Instant facelift: Splashing icy water on your face or rubbing it with ice cubes gives you an instant facelift and brightens the face as well. Follow these steps to see for yourself:
  • Wash your face, making sure no make-up is left behind
  • Splash with the icy cold water or rub ice cubes all over your face
  • Then whisk up an egg white until its frothy, spreading this over your clean skin. Leave to dry for a couple of minutes
  • Wash the face with cold water and leave to dry
  • Add some non-comedogenic moisturizer
  • Tired eyes: Long hours at work at the computer and other things can make your eyes really tired. But here is a superb eyewash to refresh the eyes instantaneously. Take some iced spring water, adding to this a couple drops of rose water, add 2-3 drops of honey and then immerse your eye in this liquid. Try to open your eye a bit. Then do the same process for the other eye, using fresh ingredients. Your eyes will feel fresh and soothed.

Conclusion

Seeing as our skin is our body’s largest organ and since our hair is our crowning glory, it makes sense that we should try and give them the best in attention and care.

A lot of us who are health conscious are becoming more and more conscious of what we put into and on our bodies and this same attitude needs to be taken when we plan on products to look after our hair and skin.

The face creams, the body lotions and potions for our skin and hair are what gets absorbed by our skin and our scalps – surely you don’t want to punish your body with toxic stuff?

Consider going natural with natural products – you will feel and look on top of the world. Remember that your hair and skin is really 90% of your selfie! And both hair and skin are what you wear for the rest of your life!

Styling

Styling products add the final touch to your newly detoxed hair - if you use the right amount of the right product. Hair experts agree that most women use far too much styling product, which overloads the hair and starts up the toxic

Blow dry the hair working down from root to tip, and finish off with a cold blast to keep the cuticles flattened and boost shine cycle all over again. So if your styling product doesn't seem to work, or if it leaves your hair limp, heavy or greasy, use less. Apply the minimum and wait to see the effect - you can add more later, but you can't take it away,

HOW MUCH STYLING PRODUCT?

Mousse - use a golf ball sized blob.

Gel - use a large sized blob.

Serum - use a small sized blob.

Wax - use a pea sized amount.

Tailor the recommended amounts to your hair length - use half as much for chin-length hair, and twice as much for shoulder-length.

Products take a couple of minutes to work so wait to check the effect before applying more.

Read the label carefully – make sure you are using the right product for your hair type and style.

Hey guys so for today's video I have my hair care routine I'm so excited for this because you guys have been requesting this for forever now but most of you guys know I've been in the process of removing my black hair so I kind of wanted to wait to show you guys my hair care routine once that was finished cuz you know my hair was like up and down it was fading it was patchy and it still is a little bit uneven cuz I'm like you know trying to fully transform to dark brown hair so for those of you who might have missed it I actually flogged my entire process of going an getting rid of my black hair and it's actually up on my vlog channel

so if you're interested in seeing how I got rid of my black hair let's just say it was a journey go ahead and watch that on the vlog Channel I'll link it up here for you guys so after bleaching my hair of course it did feel dry and it was a little bit damaged but honestly I swear by this haircare routine it really really really helps my hair

for those of you who are subscribed to my app I actually just put up my full like little treatment session that I did right after bleaching my hair and that really helped save my hair so if you are subscribed to my app make sure you check that out and if you haven't downloaded my app yet just go ahead and download it from the App Store you can just search up ami Macedo or I will leave the link down below for you guys I do kind of just want to go over my number one like I preach this so much I've been preaching this for years my number one hair secret is to not wash my hair often so I only wash my hair once a week every Sunday once a week I washed my hair today's Monday so that was a little bit of an exception because I'm filming it is the number one factor in what keeps my hair super shiny and super healthy I let my natural oils sit in my hair and I don't wash my hair often your hair naturally produces oils and those oils protect your hair and nourish your hair and if you're just stripping them away and washing them away every day every other day even every three days

it's such a waste like your hair wants those natural oils I know it kind of sucks because you have to deal with like greasy hair a little bit for me it does suck like towards like I would say Thursday Friday Saturday I'm already like okay my hair has to go in a ponytail or a bun or something or major dry shampooing of course those last few days always are tough but I don't mind it I've gotten so used to it I can honestly say that that's my number one hair secret

I truly feel like it's the number one thing that's helped my hair grow so long as so today I wanted to show you guys from start to finish my entire hair care routine what I do when I wash it what I do when I come out of the shower now I actually normally never blow-dry my hair I let it air dry but for today I wanted to show you guys like a full routine if I was in a rush for example like today where I needed to film and I needed my hair to be dry and I didn't have time to let it air dry I wanted to show you guys that as well so I showed you guys my blow-dry routine and also how I get my sleek straight hair so if you were interested in checking out my hair care routine then make sure to keep on watching

so this is the shampoo and conditioner that I use I stick with the white bottle but I ran out of shampoo so I have to use this shampoo instead if that makes sense but I like the rebound one but this one is good too anyways we're gonna start off with some shampooing and because this is the first time I am washing my hair since I just got it dyed a 4 n a really dark brown it ended up turning out pretty dark still so since it is semi I knew that it would fade and I wanted it to fade so I actually shampooed my entire head but normally I would just do the roots and let the rest trickle down but today I went I went home with the shampoo so this is the rebound

number 2 mask this is kind of like a pre-conditioner they call it I put a good amount of this because I have long hair and I put this does this happen to anyone else by the way where like falls on your back and you have to like struggle to pick it up anyways I have long hair so I take a good amount of this and I make sure to put it all over my hair yes even the roots put it all over and I really make sure to run my finger on my fingers through everything so that it can really evenly get all over and I do leave this in for about 5 minutes you guys this stuff is magic it's actually amazing and it really really really softens your hair and I find that it helps with frizzing and like baby hairs a lot so last step of course is conditioner so I'm just gonna take some of this and mainly put it on the mid to ends of my hair and I like to leave conditioner in just for like a minute or so let it kind of sit there for a little bit and then rinse it out so once I get out of the shower I never rub my hair too vigorously with the towel I just kind of like Pat it dry and I was

just like checking my hair out in a mirror to see how it faded you guys it faded so brassy like my hair has so much orange tones in it now but I'm just gonna have to deal with it for a while until I can recolor my hair and get those out of there but anyways I like to use this heat styling primer from violas yeah that's how you pronounce it the best thing about this is you literally only need a tiny amount and it just it's so milky that it spreads so evenly you'll notice too I like to apply all my products before I brush out my hair and that is so that when I do brush out my hair the products can get through the hair evenly and it helps to evenly move it around if that makes sense so I love this oil it's amazing it really helps with frizzing but also you know just keeping my hair super smooth so I like to apply most of that at the ends and then you'll notice whatever is left over I do trickle it to the mid and then put a tiny bit of what's left over on the top so I'm just gonna go ahead and put the comb in between my nose and eyebrows and make a middle part so to brush out my hair you guys this brush is amazing I always hate brushing my hair cuz it tangles and it just hurts so bad but literally this brush does not hurt at all like literally you do not feel it at all but if you have super thick hair you are gonna need to do what I do which is just go over with a paddle brush that last little bit to get everything out but the other one it doesn't hurt at all and it gets most the tangles out so I love it I can't live without it so for blow-drying I wanted to show you guys what I do when I blow-dry and it's pretty like I don't do anything too fancy to be honest with you guys the only thing that I will say that I do is I don't put it on super hot heat anymore because it really does damage the hair so I try my best to keep it on the lowest heat option

I'm not a fan of having it on cool but I mean that is better but yeah I just keep it on the lowest heat option and I like this t3 blow-dryer it's really really really nice and I love the packaging the white is so pretty you can really see the brassiness in my hair now in this like it's so orangie chocolatey but it's all good and you can also see like the patchiness throughout this video - so this is my favorite favorite favorite straightener it's the t3 lux straightening iron this isn't sponsored by them or anything I've worked with them in the past and I just love their tools so yeah my favorite thing to do is first off straighten my sideburns I hate like I cannot live with straight hair if I haven't straightened the back of my head and the sideburns like I want to make sure everything is super sleek and I love this straightener it literally you guys like you only need to pass through your hair once or twice and it just straightens it so good I'm in love just please ignore the patchiness and the brassy tint this is what happened after I washed out my hair like it just really faded out intensely but it's all good I'm gonna recolor my hair and like a week or two and I'll probably vlog that for you guys

so you guys always ask me what I do for flyaways and this is my little trick this is the way finishing cream oh my god you guys it smells amazing you only need a tiny amount and it's kind of just like a thick cream and you just kind of paste it down and it really holds your little strands and flyaways down without it being too like sticky or anything like that and I love this - this is a dry oil mist it just helps to really replenish the shine in my hair and just get that last little finishing touch so that is pretty much it for my hair care routine you guys I swear by these products and these tips they really help keep my hair super healthy and shiny so yeah as always thank you guys so much for watching
