Choosing the right perfume to suit you

The right perfume is more than just a smell: it's your personal essence in a bottle. Follow our simple guide to finding the perfect fragrance to suit your mood.

Smell is our most primitive sense, affecting our sensuous animal side, and arousing powerful feelings, such as sexual attraction, hunger and emotion.

Authorities think it's important because our sense of smell can't be switched off, and is processed in the same unconscious part of the brain as memory - smell can bring back images of places and people in a flash.

SOPHISTICATED SENSE

But smell doesn't just affect the way you feel or think - it's our most sophisticated sense and research shows that it also affects how other people perceive you, so wearing the right scent matters more than you think.

However, with over 1000 scents to choose from on the perfume counters, selecting your scent can be a complicated process - but also very satisfying when you get it right.

Read on to find out more about the six fragrance families and discover how to purchase and how to wear your personal signature scent.

If you preferred the scents is in a particular group, check the key below to find out which scent family you favour.

  • Floral
  • Chypre
  • Fougere
  • Citrus
  • Oriental
  • Ozonic

Oriental Scent

  • Tropical flowers at night
  • Fresh ginger
  • Baking spiced buns

ORIENTAL

Rich, spicy and dramatic, oriental fragrances contain exotic spices like sandalwood and vanilla, with lots of musk and amber undertones.

It's not surprising that musk is considered sexy; it's an animal sex signal that humans can detect too.

Orientals tend to be quite noticeable fragrances, and they are often long-lasting.

Famous scents:

Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Obsession by Calvin Klein

Coco Chanel

Determining the best individual scent for you

With so many smells, designers and bottles, it's easy to get overwhelmed at the perfume counter. Here's how to find the scent you'll want to wear.

Decide what it's for - work, country weekends, romantic nights, formal dinners or a holiday in the sun?

List fragrances you like - old favourites, scents you've noticed on other people or spotted in magazine ads.

Go to a perfume shop or department store with plenty of choice and find a helpful assistant.

Tell the assistant what you like and what the scent is for; he or she can suggest fragrances in the same family.

Spritz scents you like on the paper strips provided and write their names on the strips. To clear your nose between scents, try sniffing a wool scarf or jumper.

Reduce the choice to three - more than this will confuse your nose. Spritz one on each wrist, and one on a forearm. Keep imagining where you'll wear the scent.

Wait a few hours to allow the scents to change and develop on your skin, and ask friends for their opinion. If you love the fragrance every time you smell it, buy it!

DIFFERENT NOTES

The smell of fragrance changes after you put it on because perfume is made up of a mixture of essences - called 'notes' - which evaporate from your skin at different rates.

• TOP NOTES are the first thing you smell when you spray on your fragrance. Mostly citrus, fruity and green aromas; they last around 15 to 30 minutes.

MIDDLE NOTES develop later. These warmer notes, mainly floral and woody, last two to three hours.

BASE NOTES give depth to a fragrance. Lasting four to six hours, these are the richest notes, such as marine, musk, vanilla and amber.

Coco Chanel said "you should put your fragrance everywhere you expect to be kissed"

Put on perfume before you get dressed

- apply it to pulse points, like your neck and wrists.

Spray from arm's length, so fragrance    doesn't concentrate in one place.

Alternatively, spray a perfume cloud and walk through it.

Don't over-do it -three sprays of eau de parfum or five of eau de toilette are plenty.

For a lasting fragrance, layer your scent using matching body wash, lotion and perfume.

Scent rises so put some perfume behind your knees and also on your ankles.

Alternatively, spray a perfume cloud and walk through it.

let's get started number 10 on my list is Gucci Bloom now I've been trying out Gucci Bloom for a couple of weeks now this is brand new to the market and I actually really like it.

Gucci Bloom is a beautiful floral scent that is so well done it's composed of jasmine tuberose and Rangoon creeper and it's perfect for daytime or nighttime and I could definitely see this being someone's signature scent.

coming in at number nine is Feve Delicieuse by Christian Dior now Feve Delicieuse by Christian Dior is a beautiful sweet gourmand scent it came to the market in 2015 so we've got two years on this one and it's composed by Francois Tamaki who has made a ton of fragrances that we know and love for the two your line one of my favorites is Dior Addict.

Feve Delicieuse by Christian Dior is sweet sophisticated and exquisite it's composed of Venezuelan tonka bean which I happen to love tonka bean and a fragrance it really grounds it in this earthy creaminess what I adore this is certainly one to try Feve Delicieuse by Christian Dior if you're a gourmand lover and you're looking to add something sweet to your collection if you're on a budget Dior Poison Girl is a really nice alternative to this one they're composed by the same perfumer and they have similar notes so this one is more price friendly if that's something that you're curious about. Coming in at number eight is Tom Ford's Noir Extreme. Now Tom Ford Noir Extreme is geared towards men but do not let that deter you ladies this one is just for you Tom Ford Noir Extreme was created in 2015 by Sonya constant she's the perfumer behind this fragrance and I have to say I adore it this is something that wears very close to the skin so be careful with it it's perfect for a night out or Close Encounters if you know what I mean spicy and sensual you just cannot go wrong with Tom Ford Noir Extreme,

coming in in the number seven spot is Good Girl Gone Bad by Killian now this is an oldie but goodie it's a fruity floral but I feel like it's modern and bewitching it has notes of jasmine rose tuberose plums and Good Girl Gone Bad by Killian is a fruity floral that's sweet but not too sweet and it's a floral fragrance that's very charming and adult like so when I wear this fragrance it has tropical nuances to it that I appreciate.

Good Girl Gone Bad by Killian is perfect for an Indian summer fall fragrance Number six on my TOP 10 BEST PERFUMES FOR WOMEN is

Carolina Herrera's Good Girl and I have it right here and if you can see that that is some killer shoe now isn't it. Carolina Herrera's Good Girl is a gem it is feminine it's glamorous it has notes of almond coffee tuberose jasmine and I'm sure you're noticing a trend here there's something about jasmine and tuberose that I really like in a fragrance but I have to say that Carolina Herrera's Good Girl is such an odd fragrance because it has this almond and coffee note it also has this floral essence to it and I really enjoy it from start to finish it beautiful and that vanilla dry down makes it full bottle worthy.

so now we're down to the top five on this TOP 10 BEST PERFUMES FOR WOMEN countdown and these are fragrances that I would consider must-haves in your women's fall fragrance collection

so let's get into number five coming in at number five is La Yuquwam Pour Homme by Rasasi, so we know this one in the fragrance community and I have to say I like it I actually love it it would be considered a clone to Tuscan leather by Tom Ford however La Yuquwam Pour Homme Rasasi super wearable and sweeter and fruitier and sexier it has a dark edginess to it so if you're a fan of wearing all black or putting on that leather jacket of yours you might want to add La Yuquwam Pour Homme by Rasasi to your collection it projects to the heavens and you will get compliments on this one I highly suggest this one even over the Tom Ford Tuscan Leather love you,

Tom but again for the price point and the smell the longevity the performance of this fragrance La Yuquwam Pour Homme by Rasasi overall really worth it

coming in in the number-4 spot is Blamage Nasomatto This fragrance is beautiful and somehow I feel like it's been overlooked Blamage Nasomatto is perfect for a night out and once that cool weather hits this fragrance in the air oh you're gonna faint the notes aren't listed but I get plenty of leather and peach and what a combination that is.

Coming in in the number three spot is Gabrielle Chanel now everyone needs a Chanel in their fragrance wardrobe I'm just saying. Gabrielle Chanel is very new to the market and I've been testing it because I purchased it over a month ago and I have to say I've been loving it.

Gabrielle Chanel is a very sheer ethereal fragrance from Chanel and that is not what the House of Chanel normal does which is why I actually like Gabrielle Chanel.

it's refreshingly light and I really enjoy wearing it I mean let's be for real can you ever go wrong with Chanel?

Coming in in the number two spot is a fragrance that I just you know what I'm weak this fragrance makes me weak it is from the House of Sillage Cherry Garden.

So the House of Sillage Cherry Garden is a beautiful, beautiful in gourmand oriental fragrance it has notes of almonds vanilla musk it is so freaking gorgeous. House of Sillage Cherry Garden is a compliment getter and I definitely see it as being unisex men can wear it as well first of all let's have a moment for the presentation of House of Sillage Cherry Garden because it is glorious beautifully done amazing presentation will look so decadent sitting on top of a dresser or an armoire my plan to make this one my fall signature because I've been stocking it for a while and I'm just I'm all-in

so last but certainly not least coming in in the number one on TOP 10 BEST PERFUMES FOR WOMEN and FALL FRAGRANCES is Byredo's Gypsy Water

oh I if I could drop my mic right now I totally would it is so unique and Byredo's Gypsy Water is so perfect for the Fall juniper berries bergamot lemon and since vanilla there's amber and their pine needles

I really love the dry down and this one as well and it is somewhat reminiscent of gold by commodity just the dry down but the opening of this from start to finish it is just like magic this where's well when it comes to longevity but when it comes to projection is definitely where is light so I would suggest layering it you know the house with of Byredo has got you covered

they've got the Byredo Gypsy Water lotion

they've got the Byredo Gypsy Water Kabuki brush

they've got the Byredo Gypsy Water hair perfume all of which I'll be buying for myself even though I keep my hair tied up it is the perfect perfect fall scent and I know.

What's up guys welcome back to today's video and thanks for hanging out with me again if you're new to my channel hi my name is Trevor Ritchie and I make new videos every single week covering today's hottest and latest trending beauty and skincare products from all over the world from drugstore level to luxury level if it's trending we're going to talk about it so make sure to hit that subscribe button before you go now

today's video is all about fragrance and the top 5 perfume mistakes everybody makes and how to fix them now you might be one of those people who think that cologne or perfume application is as simple as a little spritz spritz but you would be totally wrong

there's a full science behind perfume and cologne application so if you're ready to find out the top 5 perfume mistakes you're making and how to fix them keep on watching

alright guys we were jumping in with the first perfume mistake you're making and this is a big one I can't stress this enough and it's spraying your neck with perfume or cologne now you might think that it's natural to spray your neck you've seen this everywhere like spraying pulse points like your elbow is your wrists behind your knees yes your neck is a pulse point but the skin on your neck is so delicate you guys perfume and cologne is made with pure alcohol this is so drying you don't want it anywhere near your neck or your face anything that sprays up if it gets on your face this is going to shrivel you up like an apple doll you're going to be like now

two great ways to avoid spraying your neck could either be spraying directly down onto your chest area or you could do what I do and spray the back of the neck that way you still get that pulse point that trigger point you get the sweet relief of smell but you're not going to worry about drying or damaging the front of your neck

now if you're one of those people who leave your colognes or perfumes out on the counter you are committing a big no-no that brings us right to number two which is leaving your perfumes and colognes out in the open is a no no no

now if you keep your perfume bottles out on the counter and they are exposed to light what you're doing is making it break down a lot faster than if you just kind of wore through it naturally perfumes and colognes have a shelf life of about twelve months and if you keep it exposed to sunlight it is going to greatly a short in that duration of time

now the best solution to this problem it's actually suggested to keep your perfumes and Cologne in the fridge I know that this can sound totally weird to keep your perfumes next to your veggies or your fruits but not only is the fridge a dark place so the light will break down any molecules in the perfume but it's obviously a colder temperature so it's going to make all of those molecules to move a lot slower and last longer

you may have already heard about this next perfume no no this is probably the one that people know the most but I thought I had to touch on it because not everyone knows the reasons why you shouldn't do this exactly you are committing a major perfume and cologne crime if you are one of those people who spritz on your wrist and then just go to town and you're grinding and you're grinding and you're grinding it back here and you're rubbing it all over your body this is something you need to stop immediately

now the reason you don't want to go to town crushing your wrist together is because it actually destroys those top notes in the perfume which are often the most delicate notes and the ones that draw you to the cologne or perfume in the first place

top notes are generally flowers or citrus scents or those really fresh lively sense and if you crush them together you're going to blow through them probably in the first 15 minutes and all you'll be left with is those deep dark notes which will still smell delicious but you will have just blown through those top notes and why pay for them if you're not going to get them

I mean the whole reason for this video is that you guys can get the longest wear and most bang for your buck out of your perfumes and colognes so a way to fix this problem is just do one little spritz like this oh so good just do a light tap here and then the back of the neck not the front and then just wherever else you want now

the fourth perfume mistake you're making is that you're only sprained your wrist and not the other pulse points in your body now if you're just a boring old rich spritz or the other pulse points in your body include the angle behind the knee I know it seems a little bit weird to spritz them cologne down there but give it a try let me know how it goes and then it's a wrist and the neck then we should also mention to make sure you don't spray all these pulse points all at once or people will literally hate you

you will be a walking ball of sense which I mean I like but not everyone does and let me know in the comments down below if it changes the way that your perfume smells or how it interacts for the day alright guys

the last perfume mistake that you are making and how to fix it is that you're applying perfume or cologne to dry skin there is absolutely no reason to apply a perfume or cologne to dry skin a it is very damaging remember it is made of alcohol so spraying and alcohol spray on your dry skin already it's just like a big no-no

but using a moisturizer actually extend the life of your perfume as well or your cologne so if you have a well moisturized base it's going to help you hang on to that a lot longer throughout the day now a lot of luxury perfumes actually come up with a separate body lotion that you can put below the fragrance and that's kind of intended to make your scent last longer but if you find that too powerful or too overwhelming you definitely can use an unscented lotion as a base this again will help pick up the perfume and make it last a lot longer throughout the day and that guy's is a wrap on my top 5 perfume mistake that you're making and how to fix them

if you found any of these tips helpful don't forget this video a big thumbs up and let me know in the comments down below like I said this video is all about extending the shelf life and the duration of your perfumes and colognes that you can get the most bang for your buck from these amazing cents you know if you're going to spend a hundred to up to two hundred dollars on a bottle of perfume you definitely want to make it last like always

I love sitting down and talking to you guys.

Hi, everyone. It's Justine.

This video is a new episode of the "French series", which you probably know if you follow my channel already. I've decided to do four more episodes.

Today's the first one and every Wednesday this month you're going to get a new one, so look forward to that.

So far we've discussed wardrobe, makeup.

Today's video is dedicated to fragrances, perfumes, which is a topic that French women take very seriously.

I would like to show you how we apply perfume, dos and don'ts in general. I will also explain how we integrate perfume in the overall beauty routine and why my country is so famous for its fragrances. Actually, I'm going to start with that.

Why is french perfume so famous?

There is a small town in the South of France called Glasse. This little town has been providing Paris and the courts and the kings of all Europe with perfume for hundreds of years, so all the know-how and the craftsmanship is concentrated in that little area in the South.

All the noses of the Luxury houses you can think of have learned there, even today. The nose is the job title of the perfume creator.

There is only one per house at a time, not more.

So there is one at Hermès, there is one at Guerlain, etc.. That individual is extremely valuable to a company because if he can create a perfume that becomes a "classic", a "timeless" fragrance, It's going to bring multi-million euros to the company.

It's a huge business. Anyways, Glasse and the area around it has excellent weather, great sun conditions, and that's perfect for flowers. If you drive through the region in your car, you're going to see fields and fields of mimosa, tuberose, orange trees, and the orange blossom from that tree is for instance extremely appreciated in fragrance making.

In the past, perfumes were made out of flowers; distilled. So perfume makers found in Glasse the best for materials they could think of, and that still goes on today. From distilled flowers to modern perfume. Today, perfume makers use natural but also synthetic ingredients mixed together, so if you're good, when you smell the fragrance, you might recognize a note or two, a flower or two, but as a whole it has a smell you couldn't find like that in nature.

The first "synthetic perfume" very well known and early on the market was Chanel No. 5.

Do you know why it's called Chanel No. 5?

Gabrielle Chanel had, at the end of the process, little bottles, numbered to pick a winner from, and she said I'm just going to pick my lucky number, so she picked number five.

The perfume was also launched on the fifth of May, which is the fifth month of the year, 1921, and that brought good luck indeed because to this day it's, every year, on top of the bestseller list in every single store. What's the difference between parfum, eau de toilette, etc.? If you smell Chanel No.

5 or fragrances from that time you'll notice that they're all extremely strong and not all women wanted to wear something that strong. So little by little, fragrance makers learnt and started to develop lighter versions. Now, you basically have three main levels. Parfum is the highest concentration. That one does not leave you, ever. You can't get rid of it, anymore. The intermediary concentration- a bit more diluted- is called eau de parfum and the lightest one is called eau de toilette.

That one will disappear eventually, after six hours depending on the acidity level of your skin, but it will eventually disappear so you'll need to reapply. Eau de toilette is the most commonly worn today because people say the smell of your fragrance should not overpower the smell of your food otherwise, you cannot enjoy your food anymore. We've got our priorities quite right in my country. Also, since the 20th century, people have running water in their houses and can clean themselves regularly. We don't need perfume to hide our own body smell anymore. Sounds gross, but hey- there was no daily bath in Versailles. You know what I mean? How to apply perfume? In France, there are two clubs, two schools of thought: The first one says you apply perfume delicately onto your strategic body points. The first one is the inside of the wrist, not too close to the hands, because you're going to wash them, so you want the perfume to stay a bit longer.

Then, behind the ears, here, or here on the neck, underneath the jawline. That's for when you kiss people French way, so they can smell you. Then, the inside of the elbow if you want to smell stronger, and, not to forget, behind the knees. That's for when you walk past people who are seated, in summer, so they can smell you, too. Everything is completely thought through. Important to remember is that you should never rub perfume. It is already on the points that are hotter than the rest of your body because the skin is thinner on those areas, so it's heating up the perfume anyway and it's going to go into the room thanks to that.

If you rub on top, you're overheating the perfume. It's breaking the molecules and it's going to change for worse, the smell of the perfume later, so you want to avoid that. The second school of thought says- very easy- perfume should not be touched at all. So you spray a cloud into the room in front of you, And then you walk through the cloud to catch the molecules, if that makes sense. It's not rocket science, but everybody will tell you the same thing.

The good thing about that is that then your hair smells, too and when your hair is moving, when it's windy, wherever you're going today, then it's really nice to smell for people who follow you.

But if you use this method, you will need to reapply a bit more often during the day because it's going to vanish away faster. For that purpose, many brands now offer a solid version of the liquid perfume that you have at home so you can carry it around in your purse and use it anytime during the day. That's one by Fragonard: one of the most famous houses in Glasse. I bought it there. It's orange blossom, in beeswax, so it's actually more traditional fragrance. It does smell like nature. I don't wear this one. I put it in the box with all my pens and tools, so every morning when I open the box, it smells like the South of France. It's fabulous.

Which type of perfume would french women actually wear? I would say, definitely, it evolves throughout a lifetime.

Every Frenchy I know would probably agree with that statement. Young women go for sweet things: brands like Mugler. Angel is a typical teenager or young women fragrance. Cacharel: That's a brand I used to wear. When I smell it now on somebody else, I think oof-- --way too sweet!

My God! Ha! I can't stand it anymore.

And then, growing up, women turn away from light... sweet, light, flowery fragrances and turn towards more intense scents, like sandalwood or like tuberose; deeper types of jasmine flowers, etc.. If you walk through a perfume store in France, you will hear women trying things on and saying I'm too young for that one. Fragrances for different age targets smell very different indeed in French houses. Usually french women own more than one perfume so they can actually pick from a whole range based on the occasion, the day, the mood. My basic one is Chloe Eau de Toilette: That's a classic. It's a top seller so I also know that I'll be able to refill when that bottle is over. It's my third or fourth one already.

It's good for any setting, kind of.

It's not too heavy.

It's not flowery, because I don't like it. It's somewhere in between and it works pretty much all the time. When I need a confidence kick, I use Chanel No. 5 Eau de Toilette.

That's something I would match with my men's shoes and on those days, I can swear, people take me more seriously. Really! Perfume is a weapon and French women know that very well. But, here, I also have to say it took me years before I felt ready and grown-up enough to actually be allowed to wear Chanel No. 5, even though I stick to the eau de toilette, because it's such a symbol. Those fragrances from big houses come with such an image behind them that they're not easy to support, I have to say.

Then, I have a couple more playful ones that I would not use up the whole bottle of, so I usually get those in mini sizes. Saint Laurent is typically one that does great sets of five or six little fragrances so you can switch up based on the mood.

All of them are quite heavy, but I'd wear that to go out, for instance. How is perfume integrated into the beauty routine? Your perfume is you: it stands for you, and usually you spend a lot of time finding the one. So, all the rest of your beauty products have to work around it and adapt.

So French women would typically not wear coconut-flavored body cream or watermelon lip gloss or something, because imagine when you add perfume on top of that, strong perfume... horrible! That's why French cosmetics usually have very decent, discreet scents: it's to not compete with your perfume. Another thing: You wouldn't wear perfume every day of the week because the nose gets used to it, and after some time you can't notice it anymore and you feel like you have to increase the spray to still be able to smell it. At the price of the bottle, you want to notice when you're wearing it, and you want to enjoy it, so you typically hear women saying oh, not today or this week, I'm on a perfume break.

I'm not wearing any. When French women wear their perfumes, they fully appreciate it as the luxury that it is.

Now you know the whole philosophy behind French women wearing perfume.

Finding the right one is a bit like finding your style in fashion: It's fun, but takes a while. Now I'm curious. Do you wear perfume?

What's yours?

What's the history behind?

Why?
